Moving To Alberta? Quick Tips

If you’re an LPN moving from another Province, there are a few things you should be aware of prior to your move. When I decided to move back to Alberta in July 2007 after spending 10 years in BC, I thought it was going to be a piece of cake getting my old license back….wrong.

To save you some time and trouble here are a couple hints to make your transition as smooth as possible:

Contact CLPNA:
Email CLPNA for the application forms to apply for out of province. Go to their website and find “Applicants” there you will find the email address. Make sure you make copies of the forms they send you.

Contact all your educational institutions:
If you took further education related to your LPN, get all the original transcripts. The certificate you received at the end of the course will not cut it. Be advised that most institutions will charge you around $5-$10 for transcripts. Have them send the transcripts to CLPNA on your behalf.

Contact your own provincial licensing board:
If they will, get your current licensing board to give you a statement of your hours worked and where. If you want to get hired as an LPN in Alberta and not start at the bottom of the totem pole you need all your employers and the dates and number of hours etc.

Sit and Wait:
It may take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to get your application approved. Much longer if you are from out of the country. Be prepared to have to take some courses, I had to. When the College informs you of the courses you need to take, get registered. I had to take Adult Health Assessment. Courses range from $100 – $400 with textbooks on top of that. The CLPNA will send you out a “limited” license once they have proof you have been registered. They will call the educational institution to verify plus you must send them copies of your receipts so don’t throw them away.

The Money Honey:
So how much is this going to cost you? Well here’s my breakdown.

CLPNA:
Limited License $75.00
Continuing Competency Binder $30.00
Active License $250.00

Grand Total to CLPNA $355.00 this must be paid in full before you will receive even your limited license.

Bow Valley College:
Adult Health Assessment $295.00
Food and gas $100.00 I was fortunate enough to have friends and family in Calgary so I didn’t need to pay for accommodations. I also borrowed a textbook. I applied for a grant to cover my course and you can get that info off the CLPNA site.

So Grand Total To Take Course: $395.00
Transcripts to Various Educational Institutions: $25.00

TOTAL SPENT GETTING MY LICENSE: $775.00 MINUS $295.00 if I get the grant approved. So be prepared to pay around this amount.

UPDATE: My grant was not approved as the adult assessment course is part of the basic program and the grant only covers for courses that are not taught in the basic program such as the OR tech or orthopedic program.
